Shaken Blessings Celeste Charlene 9781518640001 Books Reviews
I liked the beginning of the book better than the end. It seemed to me that by the last part of the book the events were being repeated, just in different words. This got old.
I liked Sandra's trust in God. I loved her relationship with her daughter. I don't want to spoil the ending, I will just say something surprising happens.
Just one more chapter. Then I really have to put this book down and go to sleep. That's what I kept saying, all the way through "Shaken Blessings." Blend a lot of intelligence with plenty of stubborn determination and a big heart full of faith and there she is--Sandy Calbrin, my kind of heroine. There's no need to spoil things with any common sense! It's clear the author has a wealth of knowledge about African customs and traditions, which she mixes into the enchanting narrative of Sandy's amazing adventures. Definitely worth reading.
This unique story fascinated me. I know very little about African customs so I found it intriguing to read about the difficulties the heroine experienced in attempting to teach the people better ways to feed and care for their children. Despite the heroine's devotion, the constant harassment she endured by the military officials supplied plenty of suspense. Then there is baby Blessing, believed to be cursed because her mother died giving birth to her. The heroine is given the child because nobody else wants her.
A different, but beautiful tale of devotion.
A remarkable year in the life of a businesswoman changes her and lives she touches.
Sandy Calbrin, Sister Sandy to the African people she nurses, becomes Mommy Blessing when she fosters a doomed baby. Sandy thought she was doing her Christian duty by sponsoring several girls in an orphanage in Africa. When the country underwent a coup, she decided to take a trip to check on the girls and pick up some shea nuts for the spa treatments she offers at her spa.
Things go left as soon as she arrives. The orphanage was abandoned, the military have power, and the mission asks if she’ll use her nursing experience to help stem a measles epidemic. Her situation continues to deteriorate as she accidentally breaks nearly every taboo in the unfamiliar culture.
A couple of week adventure turned into nearly a year of struggle, including an opportunity to be a mother who loves and releases her child, a health worker who attempts to teach better health habits in the face of cultural practices of generations, and grow her once-tepid faith to that of a prayer warrior who even longs to return.
This book is not a genre story, but a remarkable, almost coming-of-age book although the main character, Sandy, is not a teen. Recommended for people who enjoy reading and living about different cultures from an author who experienced the lifestyle firsthand.
The book is fiction, Christian fiction, but I suspect that a lot of it is from the experience of the author, who has been a missionary in the African bush. The parts that probably are from such experience -- they ring true -- are the culture of the African rural people, including their ignorance of hygiene, and their generosity; living far from civilization; and putting up with petty bureaucrats and police. The book doesn't put down Africans, or glorify them. It makes it clear that North American culture isn't perfect, either. We put way too much stock in our possessions.
No main character falls in love, not even close, so if that's what you want, this isn't for you. No one becomes a believer, except the protagonist, who either becomes one, or is restored, depending on how you look at it. In a sense, that's the plot of the book -- idealistic nurse goes to Africa to help others, and is helped herself. She finds a vital relationship with God, and that helps her out of all sorts of situations. God definitely guides her several times.
The book is well done technically. I found exactly one usage error, namely "reigns," which should have been "reins." There were a few too many episodes that were too much like each other, but they served to reinforce the difficulty of trying to help provide health in a primitive culture.
A fine first novel.
